Second Grade

Dear 2nd grade students and parents,
Shalom,
It was great on the first day of Hebrew School to see all the familiar faces of kids and parents from last year and to welcome our new students and parents.
We will have 15 students in 2nd grade this year as we’ll be joined by four new ones. I want to welcome   Alison,  Alec,  Michelle and Sophia to our class.  I know they are going to adjust fine and will be a great contribution for all of us. We will also be joined by the two Madrichot that we all know from last year : Brianna and Molly.   To a parent who may have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know and I promise to do my best to help.
This year we are going to be focused on the Jewish Holidays and the Hebrew Calendar.  On our first lesson last Sunday I introduced the kids to the book  “The Jewish Holiday Treasure Trail” that we’ll learn and keep in class till the end of the year.   I highly recommend the parents to visit with their kids the site:  www.elijharocks.net  before each holiday where you can find games and general information about the holidays. .   In addition, the students will keep a “Holidays Journal Notebook” in class, where they can write or draw comments and thoughts about each Holiday we have learned.
As we learn about the Hebrew Calendar I will need your help with converting your kid’s date of birth into the Hebrew date, therefore I would like you please to provide me with their birth date and the hour of  birth as well ( on a Hebrew Calendar a day starts from Sunset till Sunset the next day}.   We are going to mark these dates on our classroom calendar and celebrate your child’s Hebrew Birthday.   This year I plan to introduce the Hebrew Language to the kids.  We will learn some words and letters on months that are free of Holidays.
Finally I would like to thank you for all your help and for providing the kids with great snacks throughout the year.
I would like to wish you all a Happy New Hebrew Year – “SHANAH TOVA”.
May this year will be a year of peace, health and happiness and of course successful Hebrew School Year.
See you soon,
Hava

Lesson Plan for Sunday, November 6, 2011

9:30-10:00 –Family T’filah

10:00-10:15 – Snack (Anila)
Students are assigned to help with distribution of the snacks, drinks, and napkins.  Ary and Asher normally take care of this.  All you need to do is supervise the other students until everything is distributed, then lead students in blessings over wine and bread.

10:15-10:45 – Journeys through the Alef-Bet – Meet the Mem (pp. 19-22)
I usually read each letter/sound combination and the students repeat after me.  This is a Hebrew letter recognition book, and students are not expected to memorize all material presented.

10:45-11:10 – Jewish Holiday Treasure Trail Lesson 8 – Chapter 4, pp. 40-43 – Sukkot
I usually read to the students and lead discussions about the text.  Make sure they do the sticker at the end of the chapter!

11:10 – 11:20 – Recess
We go out through the Kindergarten class (double doors across the hall).

11:20-11:45 – Art with Ary and Asher – Mar Cheshvan

Parent Letter:

August 21, 2011

Dear Parents,

Hi!  I am Jason Krosinsky, your child's 2nd grade Religious School teacher.  During the week, I am a social studies teacher at Cleveland Middle School.  I enjoy teaching and providing a positive role model for the students.

I will be addressing your child’s learning goals through two core texts:

1. The Jewish Holiday Treasure Trail.  This interactive book invites students to follow the adventures of Daniel and Rivkah as they learn about Jewish  holidays—how and why we celebrate, related history and values, and essential English and Hebrew holiday vocabulary.

2.  Journeys Through the Alef Bet.  This workbook helps students begin to develop letter and vowel recognition, as well and phonetically sounding out Hebrew words.  My goal is to help students recognize that Hebrew is an integral part of our Jewish identity.

In addition to class texts, we will be regularly exploring Jewish identity and knowledge through class discussion, art and music.

Like their regular school teachers during the week, I have high academic expectations for my students.  I encourage them to push themselves to build on their skills and develop new strengths through the Religious School curriculum.

One whole challah is offered as morning snack by the school.  Because this is not enough food for growing children, I am asking parents to sign up with me to take turns providing additional snacks.  I will also be sending home a letter in the coming weeks concerning food allergies in the class so that parents may plan appropriately.

If you wish, you are welcome to call me or meet with me at a mutually convenient time.  My home number is 883-3153.  I appreciate the opportunity I have to teach your child.

Sincerely,

Jason Krosinsky

Jason's Bio:
Mr. Jason Krosinsky received his Bachelors degree at New York University and his Masters at UNM.  During the week he teaches 7th grade social studies at Cleveland Middle School.  He enjoys reading, cycling, and playing chess.

Welcome to the 5772 School Year!!!
